Safety Guidelines for Candles

A lit candle adds warmth to the atmosphere of an indoor space and is a pleasant way to relax. However, an open flame always requires adherence to necessary safety rules to avoid any unfortunate and unpleasant incidents that could endanger candle users.

Preparation Steps

  • Always read the candle label and carefully follow the instructions.
  • Do not use outdoor candles (e.g., cemetery candles) indoors. This is particularly important because outdoor candles typically have larger wicks, which produce more heat and may release soot.
  • Remove any packaging from the product.
  • Before lighting the candle, trim the wick to approximately 5-10 mm or the length indicated on the label. Note: Avoid leaving the wick too long, as long or crooked wicks may cause uneven burning, and the candle may start to drip or produce a large flame.
  • A lit candle should always be placed on heat-resistant surfaces.
  • Avoid any air movement, such as drafts, ceiling fans, or nearby heaters, to prevent uneven burning, soot, or excessive dripping.
  • Maintain a safe distance between candles. A distance of 10 cm is safe unless another distance is specified on the label.

Safety precautions

  • Always keep the candle pool (the liquid part of the candle) free from matches, wick pieces, and other debris.
  • Keep the lit candle away from objects that could catch fire if they come too close. Note: Always keep in mind that the flame may grow larger during the burning process.
  • Keep lit candles away from children and pets. Important: A flame easily attracts the attention of both children and pets. It is essential to keep them away to prevent them from touching or knocking over the candle.
  • Never touch or move a candle while it is burning, or when the wax is still liquid. Why? Because the container and the wax may still be very hot, which could cause burns.
  • Extinguish the candle if you notice that the flame is too large or if it starts to smoke heavily.
  • Put out the flame by gently dipping the wick into the melted wax. Never blow it out. Why? By immersing the wick into the liquid wax instead of blowing out the flame, you prevent hot wax or wick fragments from splashing around, and it also helps prevent smoking. Tip: It’s advisable to use a candle snuffer, the metal handle of a spoon, or something similar to gently dip the wick into the liquid wax until the flame is extinguished. Then, straighten the wick.
  • Never use water or any other liquid to extinguish the candle.
  • Allow the candle to cool, trim the wick, and carefully check for any unwanted air drafts before relighting it.
  • Before leaving the room where the candle was burning, ensure that it is completely extinguished.
  • After the candle has burned, it’s a good idea to ventilate the room for a while to help renew the air in the space.
